Kilauea continued its intermittent eruption on Thursday from Halemaʻumaʻu crater at the summit of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Footage shows lava erupting from the crater and spreading across its floor, glowing orange before darkening as it cools, before fresh lava begins moving again.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said Kilauea remains at WATCH level, with the aviation colour code at ORANGE. Its latest update reported increased earthquake activity beneath Halemaʻumaʻu and the south caldera region, while ground deformation indicated a shallow magma intrusion beneath the summit.

About 40 earthquakes have been detected beneath Halemaʻumaʻu since activity increased on September 30. Monitoring data suggests magma is intruding along an east-west orientation near the western or southern part of the crater.

Kilauea has been erupting episodically since December 23, 2024, with periods of lava fountaining separated by pauses. The USGS said intermittent overflows and spatter from the north and south vents have continued, while another high-fountaining episode remains possible. All current eruptive activity remains within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, centred on Halemaʻumaʻu crater.
