Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau erupted overnight into Saturday, sending lava fountains from its crater and producing a thick plume of smoke and ash, according to footage from the scene. The eruption began at around 11:07 p.m. local time on Friday and continued into Saturday morning, while authorities urged people to remain away from the volcano. Anak Krakatau remains at Level III, or Alert status. The volcano formed from the remains of Krakatau following the catastrophic 1883 eruption, while a 2018 eruption and partial collapse into the sea triggered a tsunami that killed more than 400 people around the Sunda Strait.
