A Chinese robotics company called Lexiang Technology just put its claim to the test in front of the world. During a live outdoor stream watched by more than five and a half million people, two robots powered by an AI model called Aether ran an entire barbecue station. They took random food orders from the crowd, prepped ingredients, grilled and flipped skewers, served finished plates, and coordinated the whole job between themselves without a script to follow.
What makes this different from every other robot demo you have seen is what happened when things went wrong. When a robot found a stain in the wrong spot on a piece of glass, it did not freeze or fail. It corrected its plan on the spot and kept going. Lexiang calls this self evolution, the idea that a robot's model keeps improving while it operates in the real world, not just during training before it ever ships. The same Aether model has already run on around five different robot bodies, including two armed, two legged, and wheeled designs, and can work out a new body's physical limits on its own.
This is what embodied AI and humanoid robotics look like when they move past scripted routines and start adapting in real time. Whether Aether's self evolution claim holds up to deeper scrutiny is still an open question, but the outdoor cookout demo is a real, public data point, mistakes and all. Watch how a robot handles the unexpected when nobody is there to fix it for.
