SpaceX has reported its first Moon crash of a Falcon 9 rocket upper stage, which was launched 18 months ago. Scientists knew the collision was inevitable after the rocket went off course following launch, traveling at more than 5,000 mph at the moment of impact. Former NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore noted, "Here we are 18 months later and then the upper stage slams into the moon."

Although no one actually saw the crash happen, a telescope in Chile detected a plume of debris, confirming the collision. Astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, Ph.D., explained that the rocket is "Now in teeny little pieces, scattered over the surface of the moon near Einstein Crater." Wilmore added, "Some unexpected things do happen in deep space flight that you don't plan for that sometimes you've got to deal with."

The impact represents the latest case of what is being called "lunar litter," though NASA has wrecked dozens of rockets on the Moon dating back to the Apollo missions, both intentionally and by accident. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated, "It's really hard to get back to the moon. We haven't been there in a long time. The environment is very challenging." SpaceX officials insist the company is working closely with NASA to avoid future wrecks as the United States races China back to the Moon.
