BRICS Vs Trump: Can Putin, Xi Rescue Ramaphosa As Trump Targets South Africa? | Firstpost Africa

Watch this video as Firstpost explains how Ramaphosa is turning to BRICS as Trump ramps up diplomatic and economic pressure on South Africa. Faced with escalating geopolitical and economic hostility from Washington, South Africa is turning to the expanded BRICS bloc to safeguard its economic sovereignty. Tensions hit a breaking point after the US imposed 30% tariffs on South African exports, expelled Pretoria’s ambassador, and excluded the country from the upcoming G20 Summit in Miami. Washington’s pressure stems from Pretoria’s pro-Palestinian stance, domestic land reform policies, and threats by President Donald Trump to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS nations challenging the US dollar. Rather than backing down, South Africa is hedging its risks. Russia has condemned Pretoria’s G20 exclusion, Brazil has joined forces to shield mutual trade, China has extended zero-tariff market access, and India continues to reinforce historical diplomatic ties. As New Delhi hosts the 18th BRICS Summit, South Africa is leveraging this multi-nation platform as an essential shield against Western coercion.
