Amazon has laid off employees in its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division despite investing heavily in AI. The company says the cuts are part of a strategy to focus on the most important customer initiatives while continuing to invest in priority areas. Reports suggest teams working on model customisation and post-training were most affected. The move comes amid leadership changes, fierce competition from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Meta, and Amazon's planned $200 billion capital expenditure on AI infrastructure. The layoffs signal a shift in the AI race—from hiring more talent to building leaner teams focused on delivering cutting-edge results. Cary Johnston brings you the details on Firstpost America.
