The latest Ukrainian AI-enabled drones have begun to massively destroy Russian logistics deep in the rear, turning the land bridge into occupied Crimea into a veritable trap, Forbes reports. According to open source analyst Clément Molin, more than 125 strikes have been recorded along the key logistics corridor. The main flow of Russian equipment comes from Rostov-on-Don through occupied Mariupol, then either westward toward Crimea along the M-14 highway or northward toward Donetsk along the H-20 highway. Both routes are currently subject to systematic drone strikes. On May 26, the Oko Gora monitoring group recorded more than 60 burned trucks and fuel tankers in the past three weeks alone. This figure does not include lightly damaged vehicles and represents only a small fraction of overall Russian traffic. Russian military blogger Vladimir Romanov acknowledged that strikes along the corridor have already caused a fuel shortage in Sevastopol, calling this "the beginning of the consequences" of systematic attacks on oil infrastructure and tanker trucks. A key change is the large-scale deployment of AI-enabled Hornet drones. Arms analyst and former Canadian officer Roy Gardiner told Forbes that Ukraine has sharply increased the number of drones for medium-range strikes this year, allowing it to attack significantly deeper behind the front lines. In his opinion, Hornets receive coordinates via Starlink and operate autonomously, making it significantly more difficult for Russia to jam the signal. The increasing number of simultaneous strikes, Gardiner explained, indicates coordinated swarm tactics. Dmitry Putyata, a drone operator with the 20th Unmanned Systems Brigade, confirmed that Ukraine is "actively disrupting Russian logistics" with drones for operational deep strikes. He stated that, alongside large drones weighing 50-100 kilograms, cheaper systems with a range of 100-150 kilometers are increasingly being used. "Ukraine has built up massive video databases since 2014, especially after 2022. They use this data to train algorithms to recognize objects and scenarios on the battlefield," the founder of Green Flag Ventures explained the logic behind the AI swarm. A demonstrative tactic of the 1st Azov Corps is mentioned: the first strike hits a truck, and subsequent drones attack rescue vehicles arriving to evacuate the victims – one strike turns into a cascade of logistical losses. On May 27, the 412th "Nemesis" Brigade reported that the strikes had already forced Russian authorities to restrict heavy military traffic along sections of the R-280 "Novorossiya" corridor, which connects Mariupol, Melitopol, and Crimea. Attempts to switch to unpaved roads are also encountering difficulties—Ukrainian drones are tracking equipment even outside the main highways, according to the brigade. Media previously reported that the Russian interceptor is unable to cope with Ukrainian drones. The drone in question is the Yolka, a compact drone weighing approximately 1.3 kg with a range of up to 4 km and a maximum speed of 230 km/h. It is launched from a portable launcher, after which an onboard computer autonomously tracks the target using electro-optical and infrared cameras. Analysts note that even a direct hit does not always guarantee the destruction of a large multi-rotor drone. Videos have already surfaced on social media of Russian interceptors missing or failing to shoot down their targets after striking.
