U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to begin creating a United States Space Academy, modeled on institutions such as West Point and other U.S. service academies. The academy is intended to develop future leaders and professionals for America’s growing space programme.

The proposed academy would support training for NASA, the U.S. Space Force and the wider civilian space industry. An eight-member commission led by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will advise on its structure and implementation.

The announcement came during Trump’s visit to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where he also presented the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the four-member Artemis II crew.

The honored astronauts were Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The Artemis II crew spent more than nine days in space, completing a historic crewed lunar flyby.

Trump has linked the academy to his broader plans for American leadership in space, including future missions to the Moon and Mars, as the United States competes with China in space exploration.

Watch LIVE for Trump’s NASA visit, US Space Academy announcement, Artemis II crew ceremony, astronaut interactions and major developments from Houston.
