The Ceuta migrant crisis has triggered an open confrontation between Spain and its European partners. After between 50,000 and 60,000 people attempted to enter the Spanish territory from Morocco, Italy restored targeted checks on arrivals from Spain and France strengthened controls along their shared border. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni went further, demanding Spain’s suspension from Europe’s passport-free Schengen area. Pedro Sánchez responded furiously, accusing fellow EU governments of a “selfish, polarising and unlawful reaction” driven by prejudice and political interests. Ireland, which holds the EU’s rotating presidency, has called an emergency ministerial meeting in an attempt to contain the dispute. Madrid argues that Europe must share responsibility during migration emergencies, while its neighbours are moving rapidly to protect themselves from secondary movement. The crisis has transformed Ceuta into a test of whether European solidarity can survive when national borders come under pressure. Watch.
