OpenAI is making a big move into AI hardware.

The company has developed its first custom AI chip, Jalapeño, together with Broadcom. According to OpenAI, the chip can deliver up to 1.9x better performance per watt and up to 3.6x lower latency compared with NVIDIA’s GB200 and GB300.

It also reportedly uses around 700 watts, compared with roughly 1,400 watts for the GB300.

But there’s an important detail: Jalapeño is designed for AI inference, not training. And NVIDIA’s newer Vera Rubin wasn’t part of the comparison.

OpenAI plans to start using the chip in its own data centers by the end of 2026.

Could this be the start of a real challenge to NVIDIA?
