Cuba has called for an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly to challenge the decades-long U.S. embargo, escalating its diplomatic campaign against Washington. Speaking at a press conference in Havana, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez announced that the UN General Assembly is scheduled to hold a special session on July 7 under agenda item 38. Cuba says it will use the meeting to denounce what it describes as an escalation of U.S. actions against the island. Rodríguez accused the United States of imposing an "energy siege" and "collective punishment" that he claims has deepened Cuba's economic crisis. He also alleged that Washington has threatened direct military aggression and is attempting to prevent the debate at the United Nations through pressure, blackmail, and threats. Remember, the United States has long maintained sanctions and an embargo on Cuba, while successive Cuban governments have argued that the measures severely damage the country's economy.
