New Orleans Floodwalls Are Sinking Faster

New Orleans spent fifteen billion dollars rebuilding its floodwalls after Hurricane Katrina -- and satellites just proved some of those walls are sinking faster than the sea itself is rising.

A June 2025 study used satellite radar to track the ground under the city from 2002 to 2020, and found some floodwall sections losing up to forty-seven millimeters of elevation a year. The cause isn't a flaw in the wall -- New Orleans sits on soft river delta soil that keeps compacting under its own weight, and every structure built on top of it sinks along with the ground. At those same spots, that subsidence outpaces the local rate of sea-level rise. The study's own authors say this isn't a one-time fix: every stretch of wall now needs ongoing satellite tracking, because the ground beneath it keeps moving.
