NASA's next Moon mission skips the Moon. Artemis III was supposed to land astronauts near the lunar south pole; instead, in 2027, its four astronauts (Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, Andre Douglas and ESA's Luca Parmitano) will spend about 14 days in low Earth orbit testing the Moon landers. Neither lander has flown with a crew yet. First Orion docks with a Blue Origin Blue Moon test article and the crew spends about two days evaluating it, including going inside. Then Orion docks with a SpaceX Starship test article for up to two hours (the crew does not enter). Apollo 9 tested its lunar module in Earth orbit in March 1969, months before Apollo 11. NASA's goal is to land astronauts near the Moon's south pole in 2028. Dates are plans and can change. (News from Oct 23, 2026.)
