At 7:26 this morning, a SpaceX Falcon Heavy crossed the face of the Sun, carrying into space a telescope that survived cancellation three times before it ever left the ground. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is now on its way to L2 — and its mission is almost impossible to fully put into words.

Roman will spend the next five to ten years staring at a universe that is 95% invisible, hunting for answers about dark matter, dark energy, and more than 100,000 new exoplanets.

This is one of the most ambitious space missions ever launched — and it just left Earth nine months ahead of schedule and under budget.
