Could ancient Scottish rocks help answer one of Mars’ biggest mysteries? NASA scientists are studying 1.2-billion-year-old rocks from Scotland’s Stoer Formation, where possible traces of ancient microbial activity may be preserved. These rocks formed in water-influenced environments that resemble parts of ancient Mars, offering scientists a valuable Earth-based analogue for studying the Red Planet’s watery past.[infobae][moneycontrol]
The research may also help explain unusual “reduction spots” observed by NASA’s Perseverance rover in Jezero Crater—and determine whether similar features could represent ancient biosignatures or non-biological chemical processes.
