For more than fifty years, civilian jets have been banned from flying faster than sound over U.S. land because of the sonic boom. NASA's X-59 was built to change that. When a plane flies supersonic, the air ahead of it piles up into shock waves; on an ordinary jet they merge on the way down and hit the ground as one loud boom. The X-59's shape is designed to keep them apart: a thin nose almost a third of its roughly 100-foot length, an engine mounted on top above a smooth underside, and no forward window at all, so the pilot sees ahead through a camera system. The X-59 first flew supersonic in June 2026, reached its planned cruise of Mach 1.4 at 55,000 feet, and in late September completed a record six flights in one week. Next, NASA plans to measure its quieter "thump" and fly over U.S. communities to learn what people hear, while the FAA has proposed replacing the overland ban with a noise limit measured on the ground.
