Michael Saylor just sold Bitcoin for the first time in four years, and a major bank says it's the start of Ethereum beating Bitcoin.
Reconsider the "buy Bitcoin and never sell" strategy. There's a reason I take profit, move it to the bank, and pay my bills. And that whole never-sell model just cracked.
Here's what happened. Standard Chartered's head of digital assets research, Geoff Kendrick, called this the start of Ethereum outperforming Bitcoin. The trigger was Strategy selling 32 Bitcoin, its first sale since 2022, to fund obligations. On the day the news hit, Bitcoin dropped over 5% while Ethereum dropped less than 2%, one of the biggest ETH-over-BTC moves on a down day since 2024.
The reason is the yield gap. You can stake Ethereum and earn around 3% just for holding it. Bitcoin pays nothing. Apply that to treasury companies: a Bitcoin treasury like Strategy has bills and dividends to fund and no income from the asset, so the only lever is to sell the Bitcoin. An Ethereum treasury in the same spot lives off staking yield and keeps the stack intact. The never-sell model has no engine. The ETH model has coupons you can cash.
Names to watch: BitMine Immersion, Tom Lee's firm and the largest Ethereum treasury, plus SharpLink. Kendrick's target is the ETH/BTC ratio climbing from 0.028 to 0.04 by year-end, more than 40% relative outperformance.
Honest part: ETH has actually underperformed Bitcoin this year, so this is a turning-point call, not a confirmed trend. But in a world starving for yield, the asset that pays you tends to beat the asset that doesn't.
This is not financial advice.
