An Iran-linked actor reportedly used Claude AI to track U.S. naval forces and build targeting recommendations using publicly available data. This included satellite imagery, ship and aircraft tracking data, and information from public military photographs.

Anthropic identified and banned the account, then shared information with authorities. The company also found three Iranian state-aligned accounts using Claude for influence operations and to make false claims appear to come from Western think tanks.

The bigger issue is open-source intelligence. A ship tracker, satellite image or official social media post can become useful intelligence when AI combines the pieces. Anthropic says AI is making some intelligence tasks much easier, raising new challenges for military secrecy and online information.
