This is the cheapest new car you can buy in 2026 - the Hyundai Venue Essential. The Mitsubishi Mirage is dead, the Chevy Spark is dead, and the Nissan Versa built its last car in December. So this $22,000 Hyundai inherited the crown by default. Meanwhile, the average new car now sells for almost $50,000, and a record 1 in 5 buyers signs up for a $1,000+ monthly payment. So I spent a week finding out what the floor of the new-car market actually feels like: what you get, what they took away, where they hid the cheapness, and whether the cheapest new car in North America is actually all the car you need.
