Iran has reportedly contracted to purchase between 300 and 400 Chinese-made QW-12 and FN-16 portable air-defence systems in a deal valued at up to $70 million. Reuters, citing sources familiar with the alleged agreement, says the weapons could travel from western China through Pakistan before reaching Iran, with the first shipment expected within weeks. Beijing has dismissed the report as completely groundless, Pakistan denies involvement and Tehran has not confirmed the purchase. The claims emerged days after Donald Trump said Xi Jinping had personally promised that China would not arm Iran. MANPADS cannot threaten high-altitude bombers or replace long-range systems, but they could place low-flying fighters, helicopters and drones at greater risk. Combined with a separate reported Russian missile deal, the Chinese contract would form part of Tehran’s strategy to make every future US or Israeli air mission more dangerous. Watch.
