Located in Sicily, Mount Etna is Europe's most active volcano. However, its origins remain highly mysterious, as no existing geological model fully explains how it formed. In a new study, scientists from the University of Lausanne (UNIL) explain this mechanism and reveal why Mount Etna may indeed be unique in the world.

Over 500,000 years old and towering over 3,000 meters above sea level on the east coast of Sicily, Mount Etna erupts several times a year, making it the most active and one of the most closely monitored volcanoes in the world. Despite this, its origins remain partly mysterious: no known geological process fully explains the formation of this giant.
this video, we present exclusive footage of the eruption, discuss its impact on local communities and air travel, and explore what makes Etna one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
