What if the solution to mosquito-borne diseases is... more mosquitoes?
A health-tech company linked to Google is reportedly seeking approval to release over 30 million specially engineered male mosquitoes every year in parts of the United States.
But there's a catch: these mosquitoes do not bite humans.
The male mosquitoes carry a naturally occurring bacterium called Wolbachia. When they mate with wild female mosquitoes, the resulting eggs fail to develop properly, reducing mosquito populations over time.
Scientists believe this approach could help control the spread of dangerous diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever by targeting the mosquitoes that carry them.
The proposal has not yet received final approval, but if cleared, millions of these mosquitoes could be released in states such as California and Florida.
