Germany's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council could depend heavily on support from countries in the Global South, according to analysts ahead of a crucial UN General Assembly vote.
Frederik Schissler of Frankfurt's Peace Research Institute told Reuters that Germany's chances are usually strong due to its status as the UN's second-largest financial contributor. However, he said Berlin is "getting nervous" because the race appears unusually open and many Global South countries have criticized Germany's foreign policy toward Israel.
With Global South nations making up a majority of UN General Assembly members, their votes could prove decisive as Germany competes with Austria and Portugal for two available seats in the Western European and Other Groups category.
The vote is being closely watched as a test of Germany's global diplomatic standing and influence within the United Nations.
