Fresh military clashes in the Strait of Hormuz are complicating already fragile US-Iran peace efforts. The US says it carried out defensive strikes against Iranian targets and enforced its naval blockade, while Iran has warned of consequences if the strategic waterway's security is threatened. President Donald Trump insists talks with Tehran are continuing despite reports of a breakdown, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio says any deal will require lengthy negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme and the future of the Strait. With disputes over Lebanon, sanctions, and regional security unresolved, prospects for a breakthrough remain uncertain.
