Streaming live video without an active internet connection, Wi-Fi, or even a SIM card?

That's no longer a concept. It's running live on hardware at India Mobile Congress 2026.

We got our hands on the FreeStream D2M (Direct-to-Mobile) feature phone, and it might just be one of the most disruptive pieces of tech showcased this year.

Instead of relying on mobile cellular data packs, D2M works like terrestrial broadcast beaming live multimedia, news, sports, and educational content straight to the device over dedicated broadcast waves.

Built specifically to crack the digital divide across India, this pocket-friendly feature phone lets users watch live video at zero data cost and with virtually zero buffering.

The device is said to retail around ₹1,000 and will be launching soon.

The company also plans on bringing this technology to smartphones, laptops, tablets and even car infotainment systems!

Could broadcast convergence reshape how India consumes mobile video, especially in Tier 2, Tier 3, and rural markets?
