Come Read With Me is a quick 3-minute news explainer series where one important newspaper topic is simplified for easy understanding. It helps you connect current affairs with real-world impact and UPSC relevance.

In today’s episode, we explore the designation of Chandigarh’s Sukhna Wetland and a wetland in Uttar Pradesh as Ramsar sites, taking India’s total to 103 sites, according to the newspaper report. We explain what Ramsar sites are, the significance of the Ramsar Convention, adopted in 1971 and brought into force in 1975, and the importance of wetlands in conserving biodiversity, controlling floods, storing carbon and supporting water security. The episode also highlights Sukhna Wetland’s role as a habitat for resident and migratory birds, including the vulnerable Pallas’s fish eagle, along with conservation challenges such as sedimentation and invasive plants. It discusses the growing threats posed by urbanisation, pollution, encroachment and poor waste management, emphasising effective wetland protection, scientific research and sustainable management.
UPSC Relevance: GS Paper 3 – Environment and Ecology, Biodiversity Conservation, Wetland Management and International Environmental Conventions.
