Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled his government's long-term vision for Canada's energy future, arguing the country faces an affordability crisis, a security crisis and a climate crisis that require a new national strategy. In a direct address to Canadians, Carney said the solution is to expand Canada's energy infrastructure while reducing dependence on foreign markets and strengthening domestic energy security.

The Prime Minister outlined plans to accelerate conventional oil and gas production, expand exports to Asia and Europe, double Canada's electricity grid, invest in nuclear power and modernise the country's energy infrastructure. He also pledged faster project approvals, greater Indigenous partnerships and a broader mix of energy sources, including hydro, nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal and carbon capture technologies.

Carney argued that Canada can no longer rely heavily on the United States as its primary energy customer and said electrification will play a central role in improving affordability, competitiveness and long-term sustainability. He also acknowledged that his government's revised climate strategy will result in higher short-term emissions than previously projected, arguing the previous approach was no longer suited to today's geopolitical and economic realities.
