A car appeared to have exploded on a street in a quiet New Jersey neighborhood early Monday, rocking neighbors awake.

Chopper 4 was over the scene in Totowa after the accident, which happened before 6 a.m. on Congressional Lane. The town's mayor told NBC New York the driver of the Audi sedan is a plumber in NYC and was heading to work in the morning. When he turned on his car, that’s when it exploded — no fire, just pressure.

The car was obliterated, debris from it littering the street. The fence of a nearby home was damaged, with hundreds of pieces of debris also lodged into homes throughout the neighborhood.

The driver was taken to a hospital. He had some bleeding in his ears, but little else in terms of injuries, the mayor said.
