Anthropic launched a life sciences research group and announced its first result on September 23–24, 2026: Claude autonomously flagged a previously uncharacterized bacteriophage enzyme system called array-associated reverse transcriptases, or ART, whose structure resembles CRISPR arrays. Roughly 950 agents ran for 21 hours and used 210 million tokens to screen 200,000 reverse transcriptases, narrowing 3,500 candidates down to 20 systems. CRISPR pioneer Feng Zhang called the work genuinely intriguing. The enzyme itself had been seen before — what Claude appears to have noticed first was the repeat array and an unknown partner protein acting together as one system. And then the punchline: Anthropic says it has not determined what the system actually does.
