Thousands of Israeli troops were reportedly mobilised for a major confrontation with Iran before Donald Trump abruptly cancelled the planned American attack through a Truth Social announcement. Israel’s Kan broadcaster says military units had prepared for offensive operations and an immediate Iranian response involving missiles and drones. Trump said regional governments had established the outlines of a possible agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme, adding that Israel had agreed to suspend fresh attacks. Israeli officials, however, reportedly criticised Washington’s repeated reversals as unpredictable and damaging to military planning. The cancellation followed appeals from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE, whose governments feared devastating Iranian retaliation against Gulf energy infrastructure. The decision may have prevented a wider war, but it also exposed a fundamental divide: Washington increasingly uses force as negotiating leverage, while Israel wants sustained attacks until Iran’s capabilities are dismantled.
