Have a look at the all new 2027 BYD Dolphin Surf, also known as 2027 BYD Seagull.

BYD has officially revealed the second-generation Dolphin Surf (also known as Seagull) in China, bringing major changes to the company’s smallest electric hatchback.

The new model measures 4.2 meters long, 1.81 meters wide and 1.57 meters tall, with a 2.65 meters wheelbase. Compared with the outgoing Seagull, it is significantly larger and now offers seating for five passengers, giving it a more practical and family-friendly layout.

The exterior has been completely redesigned with a more mature appearance, new LED lighting signatures, semi-hidden door handles and noticeably more substantial proportions. The revealed car also features roof-mounted LiDAR on selected trims, confirming that advanced driver-assistance technology will be available on the new generation.

Power comes from a 95 kW electric motor mounted at the rear, making the new Dolphin Surf rear-wheel drive, compared to front wheel drive in the current model. The new drivetrain layout also creates space for a useful front luggage compartment, while top speed is rated at 150 km/h.

The second-generation Dolphin Surf continues to use a lithium iron phosphate battery, in line with BYD’s wider use of LFP battery technology across its electric vehicle range.

The new car will be available with battery capacities of around 30 kWh and 39.2 kWh, with claimed driving ranges stretching from roughly 320 km to as much as 420 km depending on version.

Inside, BYD has introduced a cleaner and more modern cabin with a large floating central touchscreen, a new two-spoke steering wheel, physical controls below the central air vents, wireless phone charging and additional storage areas throughout the centre console. However, BYD removed the digital instrument cluster.

Overall, the new Dolphin Surf is far more than a simple facelift. Its larger dimensions, five-seat cabin, stronger rear-mounted motor, rear-wheel-drive layout and LiDAR technology move it much closer to a conventional compact hatchback than the city-focused original.
