Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS has once again become the focus of intense astronomical attention as observations from multiple space missions reveal unexpected changes in its appearance and activity. NASA has used Hubble, James Webb, SPHEREx, TESS, and several other spacecraft to monitor the object, making 3I/ATLAS one of the best-observed interstellar comets ever. Different instruments have revealed changes in its coma, dust, gases, brightness, and chemical composition as the comet traveled through the Solar System.

Now, claims that 3I/ATLAS is darkening are raising new questions about what is happening around the comet. Is the apparent decrease in brightness connected to changes in its dust and gas production, viewing geometry, or the way different telescopes observe the object? In this video, we examine observations from Hubble, James Webb, SPHEREx and TESS, compare what the different instruments actually detected, and explore the strange behavior of this rare interstellar visitor. NASA's data show an unusual comet with chemistry different from typical Solar System comets—but not evidence of artificial or hostile behavior.

DISCLAIMER

The phrase “Darkening” is used as a dramatic description of reported changes in the comet's observed brightness or appearance. It does not mean that 3I/ATLAS has literally turned black or that scientists have confirmed artificial activity. Different wavelengths, image processing, viewing geometry, dust production, and cometary activity can all affect how the object appears in telescope images.
