30 years of science on the Newport Hydrographic Line

It is called the Newport Line for a reason. Twice a month, scientists hop on a 54-foot research vessel named the Elakha. They launch from Yaquina Bay near OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center and travel west in a straight line out to sea, stopping at the same seven GPS locations to sample the ocean.

The Newport Hydrographic Line is celebrating its 30-year anniversary this month. The vision behind it came from Bill Peterson, a marine biologist and oceanographer with NOAA.

He started the Newport Line in 1996 and oversaw it until his death from cancer in August 2017.
